The jukebox of Lafayette - Boulder Weekly
With a nimble glance at the Nissi’s stage, one would think the pompadour wearin’, low voiced, gold jacketed, hip swingin’ minstrel was Elvis Presley himself. Upon closer inspection and a realization that it’s 2015, you’d notice the crooner was in fact Shelvis and her body the Roustabouts. On July 31, the Denver group took to Nissi’s to ring in frontwoman Lori Muha’s 50th birthday with a press of happy [Sh]Elvis fans. And as Muha celebrates a new chapter, so does Nissi’s. After closing 20 days for remodeling, the Lafayette music entry-way/restaurant is back in business and better than ever. Some of the renovations include centralizing the stage, increasing the dancefloor, adding a comprehensive admission section and updating the decor for a modern vibe. “It was starting to look like a middle-aged voyage ship. The yellows and oranges weren’t working for me anymore,” says Nissi’s owner Marc Gitlin. “Changing the look of the bludgeon was part of having that more sleek look. And Gitlin knows what he’s talking about. Hailing from New York City, he’s had the bar transaction in his blood for generations, starting with his grandma in the ’60s. He’s been running businesses his whole career starting set after college, in the late ’80s, when he became the manager of Caroline’s Comedy Club. “The guy left and asked me to run this important club,” he says. “Those were the days. I just found this list of comics I used to book — Jon Stewart, Dennis Leary, Ray Romano, Louis C. K. I paid these guys $30 a Cimmerian dark to do 30 minutes — these guys were struggling comics. He then went on to manage another bar in upstate New York for a few years before inspirational to Boulder County in 1995. “A friend of mine went to law school out here,” he says. “I would say ‘One day I’m going to get out of here and go to Colorado. ’ I was getting terminate to 30, and I wanted to get out of New York. I came out here to check it out and fell in love with it. ”. After some business ventures, including position Fanatics Sports Cafe and managing Trios Grille and Wine Bars, Gitlin was looking for a new jut out to start. He had been a customer at Nissi’s and then started consulting for the venue, which was hitting some hard financial times. Gitlin bought the arrange in 2009 and turned it into what it is now. As he renewed his lease this year, he says he took it as a chance for a muchneeded update. “It was done 10 years ago in a shabby.www.boulderweekly.com
Splendid Oaks makeover serves as tribute to its roots - Youngstown Vindicator
Consanguineous: Bar's origins a family affair. By GUY D’ASTOLFO. dastolfo@vindy. YOUNGSTOWN. It’s not like you wouldn’t even recognize the circumstances, but The Royal Oaks isn’t what it used to be. The “Bar Rescue” team has left it cleaner, simpler and classier, with a new decor that visibly pays fidelity to its storied past. Actually, for East Side resident Frank Gaetano, the new Oaks is very recognizable. “They restored it to the way it looked 50 years ago,” he said. Gaetano stopped by the bar Friday afternoon and reminisced about the days when he was a maid on the East Side and used to stop in the then family-friendly tavern. “Bar Rescue,” the Spike TV docu-genuineness series starring Jon Taffer, visits struggling establishments and gives them a physical makeover as well as fixing problems with the menu and operation. A film crew from the show was at the Oaks all week. It is not yet known when the episode will air. The Royal Oaks, owned by brothers Lou and John Kennedy, was known for its bizarre decor, bizarre objects of art, cheap drinks and shabby-chic interior, and it attracted a faithful core of regulars that ranged from rockers to professionals and the whole kit in between. It’s a good bit different now. The changes the show made are noticeable even before you walk in. The side entrance once was an unmarked door with stickers on it and an crude skull overhead. Now it is has been restored to its original black, with the word “entrance” on it and the phrase “est. 1934” overhead. That axiom is repeated on the bar’s landmark sign on its side wall, and also on the front entrance, which now bears a plaque that reads: Royal Oaks, The Oldest Bar In Youngstown. An Rule Since 1934. Inside, the space has been made roomier and more airy. The foyer has been removed, and the archway between the front bar tract and the once-cluttered rear dining area has been sized down. The dining area now has a flat-iniquitous floor with oriental carpets and tables and plush chairs. The rear wall has been redone with ornamental pressed tinplate squares, at one time a common sight in the city’s older bars. The bar area also is much simpler. After a fresh coat of paint all about, the many, and sometimes bizarre, mementos that once adorned the walls are gone. In their place are fewer, and larger, pieces of art that mirror the city’s history. These include enlarged black and white.www.vindy.com
Store Spotlight: Why Talula's in Galena is Worth the Drive - Capital Style (blog)
We’ve seen no dearth of what could be called shabby chic , vintage and antique shops pop up around town, but the owners of Talula’s in Galena—and their vivacity—are what acquire the 30-minute drive worthwhile. “Every item we sell is going to promote women to be proper to themselves,” says Anne Severs, who co-owns the shop with her sister, Suzanne Kelly. “Be who you are, and be proud of it. ”. Severs and Kelly were both deter-at-home moms with a creative itch before they decided to open Talula’s. They often did craft shows and refurbished paraphernalia. Kelly, 48 and a painter, recently celebrated her graduation from Otterbein University with an art degree. “Family’s in the beginning to us,” Severs, 45, says. “We’ve always taken care of our families, so we put our dreams on the back burner. But with the kids grown up, the sisters unswerving it was time to put their talents to good use. Talula’s opened in July in Galena, and the sisters say it fits in perfectly with the selfish town’s laid-back vibe. “We’re a little bit of country, a little bit of rock ‘n’ roll—all wrapped up in a Jesus/gypsy inner,” Kelly says with a laugh. Evidence is in the décor, clothing and gift-able items they sell, which are priced anywhere from $5 to $500 (for Kelly’s art). You’ll recoup sassy quotes to hang on your wall, as well as antique furniture and delicate accessories. “It’s like you’re walking into our billet,” Kelly says. And they mean that—customers who come in rarely leave without getting to know the owners, and the upstairs of the old almshouse that houses Talula’s serves as a hangout for friends. They’re planning to host a monthly Girls’ Night Out happening there, as well as painting classes. They’ll celebrate Talula’s grand opening with an event in September. Details will be posted on Facebook. Keeping with their disposition of mixing high and low, the ladies plan to host a pig roast—with champagne. Talula’s is located at 39 Midst St. and open Thursday and Friday from 1 to 7:30 p. m. and Saturday from 11 a. m. to 3 p. m. Hours will be extended in the fall. Here's a look propitious:.www.capital-style.com
