When it comes to redoing your larder, you can spend a little or a lot, depending upon what your tastes and budget allows. “Our kitchens have long been the center of our homes,” say Cathi Lloyd, P of Decorating Den Interiors in St. John. “So many of us have happy memories of the wonderful aromas we remember when our mothers were baking. And, since so much of our occasion is spent in our kitchens, it’s natural that when considering remodeling or redecorating this space, you would want your décor to be comforting and satisfactory – just like a great meal. For kitchen updates, Lloyd suggests adding backsplash tiles made of opera-glasses or mosaics. Travertine marble, a natural stone, is also being used for kitchen back splash, usually in a subway-sized tile. “Painted cabinets can also give a eager new fresh look for the kitchen,” adds Lloyd. “Current kitchen trends are gray for cabinets, walls or moldings,” says Christine Julian, Affiliate ASID, holder of Julian Kitchen Design, Inc. , who has designed kitchens in Southwest Michigan and the Chicago metro and suburban areas. “The newest kitchen I did had gray cabinets and I recently did another home with whites, grays, dark browns using geometrics and quartzite. What’s most important is that your colors be of the same intensity and tone. Julian believes that classics like stainless inure appliance will always be in style. She also notes that geometric patterns in home kitchens are big right now. “Modern and transitional styles have overtaken household, fussy details,” continues Julian noting her firm, which specializes in kitchens, baths, libraries, mud rooms or anything built-in, has been in firm for 17 years and does a wide range of styles including, traditional, modern, Asian, English and transitional. “Caboose styles are definitely simpler. Quartz and quartzite have continued to gain in popularity despite the higher outlay which is more than granite.
