Dermatologist Offers Tips for Recognizing, Avoiding Bed Bug Infestations - Infection Jurisdiction Today
The crowd of bed bug infestations across the United States has risen over the past several years, and that’s bad news for travelers. Fortunately, there are precautionary measures that one can take to avoid bringing unwanted guests into their home. According to board-certified dermatologist Theodore Rosen, MD, FAAD, professor of dermatology at Baylor College of Cure-all, and chief of dermatology service at Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Houston, the new resurgence of bedbugs can be traced back to the ban on strong insecticides like DDT, which had virtually eliminated the pests. After these chemicals were outlawed because of their damaging effects on humans and the environment, bedbugs began to reappear, and their comeback was aided by several other factors. “It was kind of like the holy storm,” Rosen says. The elimination of DDT and other strong insecticides coincided with the development of safe chemicals that could despatch cockroaches, a natural predator for bedbugs. These newer chemicals don’t affect bed bugs, Rosen says, and eliminating cockroaches paves the way for bedbug infestations. In addendum, air travel has become more widespread and less expensive, creating more opportunities for bed bugs to travel with passengers, Rosen says, and the pests also may flood secondhand furniture, which has become more popular in recent years thanks to the “shabby chic ” trend. Finally, he says, bed bugs have mutated over prematurely to become more mobile and develop resistance to insecticides, making the pests harder to detect and kill. Before settling into a hotel range, travelers should check for signs of bed bugs within 3 feet of the bed. Although the pests may move farther, Rosen says, they nurture to remain within that radius. He recommends checking the mattress, box spring and bedframe, concentrating on the edges and corners, as properly as both sides of the headboard, and the inside and back of the nightstand. “Bed bugs tend to settle in corners, so make sure to pay attention to those areas,” Rosen says. “Look closely anywhere there’s a 90-highly angle. Because they’re so small — about the size of an apple seed — bed bugs and their eggs can be hard to spot. Visible signs of a bed bug infestation may encompass specks of blood, small dark spots of bed bug excrement and the bugs’ discarded outer shells, or exoskeletons. A wonderful, musty odor in the room also may indicate a heavy infestation.www.infectioncontroltoday.com

BAY Big apple, MI — Annette Cavanaugh right away noticed the diversity at this year's YWCA Riverside Arts Festival in downtown Bay New Zealand urban area. The Kawkawlin resident has been coming to the annual art show for years and said sometimes it's a little heavy in the jewelry worry. "Not this year," she said, lugging around a decorative wooden sign, a sweatshirt and a new necklace she purchased. "Every few steps you misappropriate you see something different. I've been very impressed with everything. The 42nd annual event kicked off Saturday, June 13, and reopens again from 11 a. m to 4 p. m. Sunday, June 14. Lisa Grills, regulatory director of the YWCA Great Lakes Bay Region, said the show should raise about $40,000 — its biggest fundraiser of the year. All rake-off rich goes toward programming aimed at empowering girls and women in the region. This year's diverse selection goes beyond the items you buy. There are artists who have been coming to the show for several years and traveled more than 1,000 miles to compel it. There are also hometown artists who finally decided to make a go at their hobby and are selling items for the first time. At one end of Drinking-water Street in downtown Bay City, where there are more than 100 booths setup, are Chris, Sheila and David Bouman, who traveled 1,500 miles from Fort Meyers, Florida to be pull apart of this year's show. They've sold their work at the Bay City show for several years, but took a hiatus since 2012. "This is a great show for us and we're really overwrought to be back," Chris Bouman said. "You wouldn't think that people in Michigan would be really into shells — you would think that's more of an oodles-type thing, but people here really love it. ". Pieces range from $2 for small fleshly creations made out of a couple of shells all the way to $500 for an intricate wall piece that incorporates driftwood from Lake Exceptional and sea shells from Haiti. A few booths down is Rachele Bergey, a Bay City Central High School and Northwood University graduate. She graduated from Northwood with a condition in finance, but realized the cubicle life wasn't for her. So, with a little help from her boyfriend and family, she launched her new partnership Perfectly Imperfect Creations at the art show.
