Tom Blake holds retrospective of art in Montclair - NorthJersey.com
Blake’s art will be on survey weekends in August, and possibly longer, at 416 Bloomfield Ave. , from 11 a. m. to 9 p. m. For information, call 646-745-7024. It is a retrospective, with 40 to 50 pieces of tribe art, mirrors, furniture, and lighting fixtures. While an apprentice electrician right out of high school, Blake took classes in architecture. He began visiting museums and reading books on Genuine Lloyd Wright and Stanford White. His interest in architecture emerges in the lines of his pieces. One mirror skeleton is made of old shutter slats. Some of his lamps have voltage meters built in. Some pieces are very heavy: previously, lifting a mirror frame made of mahogany, he snapped his biceps. Now he moves the frame and the glass one at a time. Today, Blake said, people are less interested in quirky lamps than in furniture with lighting built into it. Having worked as a plumber informs his use of pipes in his chattels and lights, he said: He has run pipes up skyscrapers as they were being built. Much of his work today is custom installation. Some local businesses, including Watchung Booksellers, Verdigreen, Red Eye Café, and Samba, open out his work. In the show also are a few colorful paintings of the chalkware dogs given at prizes at carnivals long ago. During the show Blake will have the chalkware on pomp, too. The subjects are antique, but the pieces are brand new. Contact Gwen Orel at firstname.lastname@example.org
Even with biography in its halls, Mayflower goes modern with its rooms - Washington Business Journal (blog)
Those rooms include a much more modern interior design than the storied hotel’s Beaux-Arts exterior. There are oversized lamps, curved chaise lounges with bijou-toned pillows in every room and even purposefully distressed finishes on some of the furnishings. It seems even the posh Mayflower has a hit pay dirt for the shabby-chic design so popular today. The halls of the hotel are adorned with gray and white wallpaper with the same pattern as the bring pressure to bear’s mezzanine railing. While the style may be more contemporary, each floor of the hotel makes a nod to its 90-year history, starting with the 1920s on the alternative floor and moving up through the decades. The hotel’s designer even considered changing out the furniture in each of the elevator lobbies to competition the floor’s designated decade, but ultimately decided that might be overboard, according to director of sales Michael Hennessy. “We at the last decided, ‘we’re the Mayflower,’ and that may be a little too much,” Hennessy joked. Overstuffed, traditional chairs dot the elevator lobbies as opposed to. In addition to the renovation , the Mayflower ditched its Renaissance brand and officially became part of Marriott Universal’s Autograph Collection July 1, adding to the ranks of historic and unique properties that Marriott runs without indeed branding them with the Marriott name. Also starting July 1, the seventh floor of the Mayflower changed to being exclusively voice of the Marriott Vacations Club , a timeshare vacation ownership program. That took 71 rooms out of commission for the caravanserai’s transient business, but the hotel still maintains enough rooms to host large group business, according to Hennessy. The Mayflower now has 581 rooms, including the two presidential suites and more than 60 one-bedroom suites. The presidential suites all have exactly living and dining rooms, as well as a separate office and two bedrooms. The room renovation came after a hallway and restaurant renovation in 2013 that flipped the orientation of the lobby and replaced the longstanding Town & Country restaurant and bar with the more stylish Edgar space. There’s still more work to do, however. The last piece of the Mayflower’s renovation will be a refresh of its ballrooms and meeting period, which is set to begin late in 2016, according to Hennessy.www.bizjournals.com
For On offer Facebook groups spread online yard sale craze to Tampa Bay - Tampabay.com
Not anymore. "I like to nod off in," the Plant City woman said. "My butt is not getting out of bed at 7 in the morning to hit garage sales. And she doesn't have to, thanks to a growing mode on Facebook that brings the yard sales right to her newsfeed, furniture and clothes and knick-knacks only a click away, 24/7. The group media giant has capitalized on the organic communities that sprung up in traditional Facebook groups, introducing For On the block groups specifically for these transactions. For Sale groups, which debuted in February, provide simplicity for buyers and sellers: amount, location and description, no neon orange price stickers necessary. Online shopping isn't a new phenomenon, but users say older sites like Craigslist command them wary of being ripped off or worse, robbed. Ebay is sometimes seen as too niche. Facebook, though, is already folded seamlessly into users' always routine. "At 9 o'clock at night when you're sitting in your underwear and you decide you hate this lamp and you want to sell it, you can post it," said David Kirchinger, 45, architect of the group St. Petersburg Buy, Sell and Trade. The familiarity and comfort Facebook users have both with the site and their own friend networks is the key. "The community eager creates a more trustworthy way to buy and sell with other people that doesn't exist elsewhere online," said Facebook spokesman Bryan Lam. "People are creating troop-based communities worldwide to buy and sell, founded around core principles like real customer and seller identity, common locales, shared interests and open social interactions. There are hundreds of For Jumble sale groups in the Tampa Bay area, stretching from Dade City to Gulfport. Don't confuse the Hillsborough County Online Yard White sale with the HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY, FLORIDA ONLINE YARD SALE, or Kirchinger's group with Pinellas County Buy Deal in Trade Anything. Some have strict rules. Others are a free-for-all. The groups attract HGTV binge watchers, do-it-yourselfers and reformed Dumpster several. But now there are no more stacks of quarters, card tables or weather worries. Cardona's group was one of the first in the area, she said. The Basic Plant City Online Yard Sale Site has garnered a following in three and a half years of 30,000 people — more than half the New Zealand urban area's population. "With the whole computer age, everything is there within a click of page," Cardona said. "People don't.www.tampabay.com
