How to out your personal style - Las Vegas Review-Journal
Defining deprecating style for some can be a daunting and overwhelming task. Creating a personal style can also be an evolution. As an ASID interior artificer, I am so often faced with clients who don't know where to start. I often ask them to help me determine their design style by asking them to closely rip images from a magazine and use them as inspirational images. It is often a great start, but since clients often don't know how to describe their own design style, here are three basic tips to help get started. Begin with identifying whether your personal latest thing falls into one of these four categories: country chic, contemporary, modern or global. I find that nearly everyone's design chic falls into one of these four categories, and then there are subsections from there. After identifying your basic design category, it is time to narrow it down more and determine your style more specifically. From here I always suggest picking one signature piece that you feel defines you most. It can be an area rug with a big, bold visible pattern, a fabulous piece of artwork or a gorgeous chandelier. Whatever piece you choose will serve as the fix for the room and help to fill in the rest of the blanks of your decor. For example, if you choose a large overstuffed sofa with snow-white shabby chic slip covers, it will serve as the foundation for your space decorated with other pieces that are country chic. If you choose a sleek, leather sofa with impeccable chromed feet, this will serve as inspiration for what has all the makings of a modern decor scheme. Purchase large pieces gold medal, then accessorize. Once you have selected the signature piece you feel best represents your personal taste and pattern — and will serve as your inspiration — from there choose your largest pieces, then your accessories. Remember, your furniture enhances the space, and the accessories add to the furniture. — Cathy Hobbs, based in New York City, is an Emmy Award-winning tube host and a nationally known interior design and home staging expert with offices in New York New Zealand urban area, Boston and Washington, D. Restaurant Critique: The Pig, Brockenhurst - not to be missed - Bournemouth Echo
On any occasion since we visited The Pig on the Beach at Studland last summer, we've had a hankering to visit its older sibling in the New Forest – the master Pig in Brockenhurst . There are many similarities of course. Both hotel restaurants have the trademark conservatory style dining rooms, shabby chic décor, portly, immaculate kitchen gardens with an emphasis on home-grown produce for the table and an entrance hall stocked with wellies and brollies. But this boondocks Pig is grander than its quirky, coastal counterpart. Situated off the beaten track, it was once owned by the Queen Nourisher’s family and used as a hunting lodge. Prices start at around £3. 75 and include the best pork scratchings you’ll on any occasion taste, saddleback cracking which practically melts in the mouth served with crab apple sauce, some juicy pork sausages and quails eggs in a crumb coating with a mustard and honey dressing. We were then shown to our table in the prominently Victorian-style conservatory restaurant with its colourful floor tiles and eclectic mix of tables, chairs and cutlery. Even though it was a Tuesday evening, the in order was fully-booked. The approach to food has the same emphasis on home produced, foraged or sourced food, which ensures a Hampshire characteristic to the meal. Anything that can’t be grown on the premises is sourced within a 25 mile radius and the menu changes depending on what the forager finds. Although it is sybaritic end price wise, it is not eye wateringly expensive. The menu is divided into starters and small plates at around £8/£16, Exactly Picked This Morning, Forest & Solent, Garden Sides £3. 75 and Puddings at £7. For starters we I had Cured Pennington Beef & New Forest Depressed Salad £8 with wild rocket. The saltiness of the blue cheese was perfectly complimented with the smokiness of chargrilled asparagus. For mains my soft-pedal decided to try what is described as the “extraordinary” Bath Chap £15. 50 which has become The Pig’s signature dish. But it’s not for the faint-hearted. Half a pig’s superintendent complete with teeth, is served on a board with apple sauce and herb roasted potatoes and enough crackling to facilitate a make up for a base ball glove. Meanwhile I was making short work of my Roasted Lymington Plaice £15 served with the coating on in a Hollandaise sauce and buttered new potatoes. The delicate lemon buttery sauce was cleverly counter-balanced by the obscene flavour and crunch of finely.www.bournemouthecho.co.uk
