Chase down the perfect bargain at garage, estate and consignment sales - Dallas Morning News
Are you jumping on the painted buddy bandwagon. I love painted brick in every way, shape and form. And just to prove my affection for this classic fad, I recently painted the exterior brick of our house. And yes, I am extremely proud because I am not the DIY type. When my husband went out of township this spring just before his birthday, I decided to surprise him with a freshly painted house. It took me about two days to prep and daub the brick and then another day to paint my porch furniture and shutters. It was exhausting at times, and I wanted to quit my first day. But I’m so delighted I took the plunge and stuck it out to the end. My husband was really surprised and delighted. So why am I telling you this. Because I want to give you the confidence you constraint to take the plunge into what I call “the modern marketplace. ” You might be intimidated. You might feel like you don’t have the time. You might be apprehensive about the mistakes you’ll reap along the way. But don’t let those things stop you from trying. I like to break the market down into three different categories: Weekend Whims, Stone and Mortar on a Budget, and Fishing the ’Net. Today we’ll focus on Weekend Whims because we’re in peak seasons for these sales. In my next column, I’ll give you the lowdown on the get of the resale market. Weekend Whims: Garage Sales, Moving Sales, Estate Sales and Seasonal Consignment Sales. Garage white sale items can range from high-end designer clothing and furniture to broken old toys that really belong in the Canadian junk. Sometimes prices are ridiculously cheap, and other times people overcharge. These sales can be a gamble, but when you walk away with an accurate Louis Vuitton handbag for $25, it makes it all worth it. An estate sale is similar to a garage purchasing but is typically organized by a business that specializes in selling contents of a home after the owner has moved out or passed away. As a rule you will find antiques and heirloom pieces at these sales, but rarely trendy clothes. You could score an armful of Chanel, a disgrace-new pair of Dolce and Gabbana pumps and a Burberry wrap, though, like I did several weeks ago. The last kind of weekend buying is a seasonal consignment sale, usually held a few times a year. The experience is much like a consignment accumulation, the only difference being that the sale is hosted at another venue (usually a church) for one weekend only.www.dallasnews.com

Holidays slacken off for downtown Garrettsville - Ravenna Record Courier
Wreaths are hung from the lamp posts and fair lights and garland adorn some of the store fronts along Main Street in Garrettsville. At the corner of Main and Cheerful streets, a small but brightly decorated tree stands near a wooden sleigh. That tree and sleigh weren't there termination year, though. And some in the village might say the tree is a poor substitute for the Christmas spirit that was in the air when a building still stood on the site the Charlie-Brown-ish adornment now occupies. Last year it was the site of Chic & Shabby and Shaker Tree, two of 13 businesses destroyed in a March 22 flames that decimated the downtown business district. Business owners on Main Street say the holiday season hasn't been the same without them. "The township's definitely seen a drop, I think, in the number of people coming. I think Shaker Tree was the main gather," said Nelson Bisard, owner of Waterfall Antiques and Collectibles. "At this time last year, every splotch across the street was filled. Ellen Eckhouse, owner of the Village Bookstore, said that while her business hasn't suffered too monumentally, the feeling on Main Street isn't the same without the other storefronts. "I imagine business is less than if we had the other stores," she said. "The Shaker Tree and the Clock Shop and the others certainly brought a lot of profession, but luckily we have been busy enough. But she said it's the people who ran the shops that contributed to Main Street's atmosphere, and that's what is missing. "We exceedingly, really, really miss our neighbors, and I'm sure it's even harder at Christmas for them not to have their stores," she said. Despite the tree and wreaths and garland, and even the leviathan lighted star on their own roof, workers at the Main Street Grille and Brewing Company say the town isn't showing its mind like it did last year. "I feel like everyone who comes in comments how they like our tree and lights, but the city overall is less decorated without those buildings there," said server Kaitlin Marlowe. Marlowe and her co-workers said they're also consciousness the lack of Christmas spirit in their pockets. "Business is down, and we're not happy," said Lisa Laska. "Even for the Christmas Tread," said manager Adrienne Nichols. "All these restaurants, we were all set up and nobody got hardly anything. While their top-ranked Christmas ale, "Jack Frosty," has.www.recordpub.com
