Enyoy Lyon by bike. Get yourself gone by the board down cobbled streets and across countless bridges in this extremely bike-friendly city. Run after the tour along the quais (the banks of the river Saône and Rhône), particularly Quai St Vincent (underneath La Croix-Rousse looking up to Lyon’s tiny version of the Eiffel Tower). Cycle all the way along the bank until you get to the tunnel de La Croix-Rousse, a cyclist/uninteresting-only tunnel stretching from east to west built under the bohemian arts district known as Croix Rousse. A surreal expedition accompanied by music and dancing animals projected onto the wall. When you reach the other side, cross the bridge shortly before the Parc de la Tête d’Or , a huge park with a lake, pedalos and even a zoo. Dine pay the bill for yourself to a spa staycation - STLtoday.com
Being lodgings is considered the primary destination even though staycation refers to playing tourist in your home city, not sequestration. A tremendous many staycationers rarely bask in the rarefied splendor and sublime satisfaction of staying home and yet getting out of their assuage zone. People on staycations typically draft up lists of chores involving house cleaning, shelf edifice, garage emptying or room renovating. Won’t that be nice to clean, labor, haggle and go shopping at the hardware stow away. Maybe this is better than going to the office, factory, mall or wherever you work, but it ain’t a vacation. It just didn’t get the same reply as my previous year’s trip to Rio de Janeiro during the World Cup. Instead of enthusiast approvals, people gave me tactful smiles and nods of pity. Then in an attempt to make me feel better about my disappointing vacation news, some of them asked if I’d be doing “anything important. ” And this I knew was their attempt to recast the crestfallen look of their former reaction by preparing to feign opportune cheer over my boldly boring not-leaving-home choice. I was not chagrined. I happily explained my plans for my “Fanciful Spa Staycation”: eight massages, three facials, daily yoga, four personal training sessions and a taciturn meditation weekend. Total cost: less than $1,000. Not cheap, but a no-frills 3-day weekend in Miami costs more. My slide ticket to Rio cost much more, and that’s before the visa application, various fees, taxis, food and accommodation. That 10-day set off was also fabulous, but I returned home with killer jet lag. I’d absolutely do it again (hello, Olympics), but this year I wanted to actually remit on my vacation. I wouldn’t have to pack, unpack or tote luggage. I could sleep in my own bed, shower in my own bathroom. There would be nothing to draw a blank, no stress of getting to the airport on time, no need to stop the mail, hire a dog sitter (I don’t have a dog, I’m just saying) or anything. I’d be well-informed in and I’d be on vacation. But I was determined to do this right. I planned for my staycation a lot like I plan for any other vacation. • I cleaned the edifice before my vacation began (but this would be a great time to hire a service for deep cleaning). • I did the laundry (as if I would be winning it on vacation). • I wrote out an itinerary of favorite and new-to-me places to eat. • I wrote out a spa schedule of appointments and.www.stltoday.com
Menlo Garden: Junior League's 'cash cow' gets facelift - San Jose Mercury News
A Menlo Put resale shop that dates back to 1970 just got a facelift. Simply dubbed The Shop, the 785 Santa Cruz Ave. orientation acts as the "cash cow" for Junior League of Palo AltoMid Peninsula Inc. , a Menlo Park-based framework run by women "committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the telling action and leadership of trained volunteers," according to its website. League members, as well as local retailers and residents, for gently used clothing, accessories and household items to The Shop, which are then sold to the general public, with 100 percent of the funds generated effective back to the League for programs and grants. "The Shop is the fundraiser," said Robbie Mellows, who has managed The Shop for the career 21 years. "We're the cash cow and, knock on wood, it's been a pretty good one. The League, which dates back to 1965 and just held its 50-year anniversary jolly in May, opened the original Shop in 1970 at the intersection of Broadway and Arguello Street in downtown Redwood Town, then relocated to the smaller 785 Santa Cruz site in 1995. "We had a big space in Redwood City but then downtown Redwood Urban district changed, the clientele changed," Mellows said. "It was no longer a good source of income for the League. I only worked out of that spot for a year and I think people stole more than we actually sold. About a year ago, The Shop, which had outgrown its space, had the opening to expand to a 700-square-foot retail space that opened up next door, but it proved too expensive to track. "There would have been a lot of code changes we would have had to make," she said. "We can't spend $100,000 on engineering along to make it work for that one tight space. But that opened the door to the idea of refurbishing the current space to allow for more goods. The floors were swapped out for a more contemporary look, the front desk was made smaller and more built-in displays were installed along the walls. "It's a diverse footprint on the inside," Mellows said. "It was kind of a shabby chic look before (and) now it's much more contemporary and modern so this should stand us for another 20 years. We're spending about $65,000 for the renovations and we're raising some additional funds from some of our Band members to cover some of the things we weren't able to do through the normal budget. In addition, she said.www.mercurynews.com
