Shabby chic is a conceive of interior design where furniture and furnishings are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear and tear or where new items are distressed to attain the appearance of an antique. At the same time, a soft, opulent, yet cottage-style decor, often with a feminine think is emphasised to differentiate it from genuine period decor.
Shabby chic items are often heavily painted through the years, with numerous layers showing through obviously time-worn areas. The style is imitated in faux painting using lacquer or by painting then rubbing and sanding away the top coat to show the wood or base coats. Fabrics tend to be cottons and linens, with linen being especially popular, inspired by old French linens. Pure whites, as well as eucos and worn or bleached out pastels are favorite colours. Fabric is usually stained with tea to give it the look of old fabric. Bleached and faded are terms often applied to the style. It is not meant for old chipped fittings.
The essence of today's shabby chic style is vintage and antique furniture with the original aged paint, or painted innocent (or another soft pastel color) and distressed at the corners by sanding. Antique

Rachel Ashwell details the flowering of Shabby Chic configuration in new book - Los Angeles Times

A battered painted dresser. an overstuffed sofa covered in faded, flowered fabric. a chipped vase filled with nearly-gone cabbage roses. a brighten fixture draped in ropes of rock crystal. These design elements are a few of the lasting legacies of Shabby Chic , the home décor empire founded in the current '80s by British transplant Rachel Ashwell. In her latest book, “The World of Shabby Chic ” (Rizzoli, $45), the proposal doyenne looks back on her humble start in both life and business and shows how to mix tattered elegance with easy plenty. Ashwell called from the Prairie, her B&B in the flea market capital of Texas, Round Top, to give us a rundown of her brand’s immortal appeal. Do the white thing: Snow-hued furniture was never a practical option until Ashwell introduced washable snowy denim slipcovers to the world. “I was, and am, rather shy,” says Ashwell, “and back when I started Shabby Chic , I felt safe in saying that silver was a color I liked — I thought it very neutral and wouldn’t be noticed very much. But I came to realize it’s the biggest wow there is — it’s so stupendous in a room. And of course white denim is the most practical fabric in the world, especially if you have children. I mean, if you can’t wash it, why vexation. Distressed for success: The designer’s appreciation of chipped, worn decor owes much to a childhood spent wandering north London’s honoured Camden Passage flea market. “My mum restored antique dolls and sold them at the market, but she didn’t show up them pristine — she embraced their imperfections,” recalls Ashwell. “She would use threadbare velvets and frayed ribbons and the result were satisfying dolls with some shabby qualities. And my dad had this deep admiration for worn, dog-eared books. To this day, it’s what speaks to me when I’m walking up and down the aisles of a flea retail: the good energy of something that’s been used. For all intents and repurposes: Another lasting Shabby Chic aesthetic involves taking elements from the outdoors and bringing them favoured or vice versa. “I just look at every single piece — the palette, the material, the patina — and think, where is it superb suited. Where does it look best. ” Ashwell’s favorite items to repurpose include potting benches, metal garden chairs (“but assertive sure to add a nice, mushy down cushion for comfort”) and anything made of wood. “And any kind of garden urn or pot looks honest, especially if it’s flaking paint,” she adds. “Fill it with.

6 woods homes that rock the shabby chic look - House To Home

Deathless, feminine, and the epitome of rustic charm, shabby chic is one of our favourite country trends. The iconic term was first coined 20 years ago and it's still successful strong today, with many choosing to bypass expensive furnishings in preference for worn and well-loved pieces, from a distressed dresser to faded fabric around the corner hand in hand-me-downs. Love the look. Country Homes & Interiors show you how to achieve it in your own home with inspiring images from wonderful rooms already rocking shabby chic style. Set the scene for a romantic country look in the bedroom with an antique French-elegance bed. elaborate carvings introduce an opulent feel, pared back by layered lace throws, linen cushions and down-to-earth blankets. A weathered bedside table matches natural wooden beams and flooring for homely hut charm. Vintage flea-market finds do all the talking in this home office thanks to a plain unsullied scheme. The salvaged iron chair has timeworn appeal, emphasized beautifully by understated textiles in naked ticking prints. A retro desk lamp adds a pop of muted colour, while whitewashed walls agree to antique artwork to shine. Take shabby chic into the bathroom with a roll-top bath and traditional white fittings. Booze it up a wooden farmhouse-style wall cabinet and elegant over-the-sink mirror in matching shades of judicious green for a coordinating look that doesn't compromise on eclectic appeal. Create a decadent dressing extent fit for a queen with an ornate oversized mirror hung above an antique table. Faded florals are a key ingredient in any shabby chic hidden - the painterly motifs on these fabric lampshades introduce a pretty feminine touch, whilst jewellery hung on musical gilt stands keep the look glam. This distressed wooden dresser creates a relaxed better feel in kitchens and dining rooms. Wallpaper off-cuts mounted behind shelves and in drawers is a huge upcycle tip for adding your own personal touch to pre-loved pieces. Pile it high with accessories found at car boot sales, from intrepid gold-plated frames to delicate glass bottles and chinaware. No shabby chic dining space would be complete without a pleasing-worn table. Although white is key, pastel hues also contribute to the look - paint and distress chairs in unfit shades for a modern twist. Beaten-up enamelware and chipped china work wonderfully as planters for different flowers - a great centrepiece idea.

She's cleaning up in the Terra of shabby chic - Toledo Blade

Shabby Chic , a head that became a lifestyle, weathered the return of Mad Men and midcentury modern, bankruptcy, and confusion to emerge with its soul undefiled. Rachel Ashwell is the sheikha of shabby, the founder and creator of the look that embodies timelessness, romance, and cozy luxury. She says she nearly named the company Slip, which would have been a big one. Her new book, The World of Shabby Chic: Beautiful Homes, My Story & Vision (Rizzoli, $45), looks like a coffee-mesa book but reads like a memoir. Filled with photographs and explanations of the whys, hows and what-ifs beginning with her English teens, it involves you in her journey before your first cup of tea is brewed. "I do like to story-tell, and when I look back at all my small careers that led up to this big craft, it was all really versions of telling stories," says Ashwell. The tale behind the Slip company mention is a reasonable one. slipcovers were the first products she made. "I wanted a machine-washable, preshrunk slipcover impost-made for my sofa," she explains in the book. At the time, they didn't exist. Her dream as a child was to be part of Hollywood. She liberal school at 16 and saved enough by working to go to California. With a little networking, she found the expat British community and began working as a stylist. Amalgamation and two children were the catalysts that moved her into the slipcover business. She wanted a family-friendly home, thus washable slipcovers. She made one for herself, and all of her friends wanted them. "Strength, comfort, function" became the company's tagline as well as its mantra. Her "white" period started before she was married, when she rented a well-informed in with a bunch of boys in the Hollywood Hills. She painted everything white, which might seem counter-intuitive, considering her housemates. "For me, because I am rather shy, white felt safe as far as not committing to anything. In actuality, to commit to white is quite a statement. To shamble into a full white room is like WOW. " she says. Ashwell fell into bankruptcy in 2009 when the accommodation market and stock market nose-dived together just as she was persuaded to expand and open more stores. In 2010, she bought The Prairie, a bed-and-breakfast in Disc-shaped Top, Tex. Guests fell in love with Shabby Chic again. "I call Shabby Chic a movement," she says. "The preconceived aesthetic of Shabby Chic is flowers, whether brand-new flowers or.
