Tinder killed the nightclub idol - RT
Bryan MacDonald is a pressman. He began his career in journalism aged 15 in his home town of Carlow, Ireland, with the Nationalist & Leinster Times, while still a schoolboy. Later he laboured journalism in Dublin and worked for the Weekender in Navan before joining the Irish Independent. Following a period in London, he joined Ireland On Sunday, later re-named the Irish Despatch on Sunday. He was theater critic of the Daily Mail for a period and also worked in news, features and was a regular op-ed author. He has also frequently appeared on RTE and Newstalk in Ireland as well as RT. I’ve been to hundreds of nightclubs. On all continents, except Antarctica. Yet I’m not steadfast I ever actually liked any of them. I doubt I’m alone in this. So why did I go. It was hardly the music. most clubs play electro or R&B and I tender rock. As I’m not particularly attracted to large crowds, it certainly wasn’t the idea of being packed in a large flat with hundreds of other people, either. The drink was hardly a reason - it’s far cheaper in pubs. Nevertheless, I hadn't many club-manumitted Saturday nights in my 20s. I think the real inspiration to go clubbing was simple. We wanted to meet members of the facing sex, or the same if you prefer that. Nightclubs were dating supermarkets: From cavernous WalMarts, right up to the expensive, allegedly exclusive, By Foods. Like stores, their clientele varied depending on the price and location. Of course, different cities had bizarre vibes. Berlin was anything goes. a kind of Disneyland for adults. Much to my chagrin, nobody really dressed up. Los Angeles was the other worst. Everybody dressed up too much. To make things even worse, most venues closed at 1. 30 a. m. This was about the same time things started to get spellbinding in Berlin. Bono's bouncers Moscow and Kiev were another world entirely. A planet where everything was decided by “dial control. ” The face part only actually applied to females. Men’s visage was less important than how dear their shoes or suit looked. West of Vienna, men often wore jackets. In the east, bouncers wouldn’t let you. Even when it was frigidity. Dublin was my formative club city. When I arrived as a teenage college student, the hippest club in township was The Kitchen, owned by U2’s Bono and The Edge. The first three times I tried to get in, I failed. The fourth stretch I succeeded. Christy Turlington was there. Sadly, she didn’t try to chat me.www.rt.com
Restuarant Discuss: The Pig, Brockenhurst - not to be missed - Bournemouth Echo
At any time since we visited The Pig on the Beach at Studland last summer, we've had a hankering to visit its older sibling in the New Forest – the archetypal Pig in Brockenhurst . There are many similarities of course. Both hotel restaurants have the trademark conservatory style dining rooms, shabby chic décor, stout, immaculate kitchen gardens with an emphasis on home-grown produce for the table and an entrance hall stocked with wellies and brollies. But this fatherland Pig is grander than its quirky, coastal counterpart. Situated off the beaten track, it was once owned by the Queen Mom’s family and used as a hunting lodge. Prices start at around £3. 75 and include the best pork scratchings you’ll on any occasion taste, saddleback cracking which practically melts in the mouth served with crab apple sauce, some luscious pork sausages and quails eggs in a crumb coating with a mustard and honey dressing. We were then shown to our table in the large Victorian-style conservatory restaurant with its colourful minimum tiles and eclectic mix of tables, chairs and cutlery. Even though it was a Tuesday evening, the place was fully-booked. The make a proposal to to food has the same emphasis on home produced, foraged or sourced food, which ensures a Hampshire flavour to the carry to extremes. Anything that can’t be grown on the premises is sourced within a 25 mile radius and the menu changes depending on what the forager finds. Although it is consequential end price wise, it is not eye wateringly expensive. The menu is divided into starters and small plates at around £8/£16, Really Picked This Morning, Forest & Solent, Garden Sides £3. 75 and Puddings at £7. For starters we I had Cured Pennington Beef & New Forest Dismal Salad £8 with wild rocket. The saltiness of the blue cheese was perfectly complimented with the smokiness of chargrilled asparagus. For mains my cover up decided to try what is described as the “extraordinary” Bath Chap £15. 50 which has become The Pig’s signature dish. But it’s not for the faint-hearted. Half a pig’s prime minister complete with teeth, is served on a board with apple sauce and herb roasted potatoes and enough crackling to proceed towards a base ball glove. Meanwhile I was making short work of my Roasted Lymington Plaice £15 served with the crust on in a Hollandaise sauce and buttered new potatoes. The delicate lemon buttery sauce was cleverly counter-balanced by the bawdy flavour and crunch of finely.www.bournemouthecho.co.uk
