Cinema REVIEW: 'End of The Tour' a tour de force for Jason Segel - Wicked Local Milton
When a famous clown gets serious, Oscar takes notice. Just ask Steve Carell, who’s unexpected dramatic deviation in “Foxcatcher” garnered the Marshfield comedian international acclaim. “The End of the Tour” might well do the same for perennial funnyman Jason Segel, whose engrossing portrayal of doomed author David Foster Wallace is just novel enough to get him noticed by the keepers of coveted gold statuettes. Disappearing behind a shabby-chic assemblage of cheesy bandanas, era-appropriate grunge apparel and a mop of hair almost as unruly as Wallace’s self-high opinion, Segel tears the cover jacket off a man whose vast insecurities are both his strongest weapon and his best defense. He’s a walking, talking contradiction, fully embracing the garbage-food pop culture his writings so vividly detest. Segel, likewise, is a virtual Jekyll and Hyde, gracefully tiptoeing for everyone the edges of Wallace’s hypocrisy to locate the center of a man so complex he hasn’t the faintest idea who he really is. It’s 1996, and Wallace is riding elevated on the universal success of his bulbous, 1,079-page masterpiece “Infinite Jest. ” He’s both the hero and the antichrist of literary circles because he doesn’t like to truckle to the game. He defiantly shuns the lime light, preferring to live in virtual seclusion as a creative-calligraphy teacher at Illinois State University. That’s in Normal, Ill. But true to Wallace’s eccentric personality, he lives just surface of Normal in Bloomington, Ill. , where he shares his humble, snow-covered abode with his two ravenous rescue mutts. It’s also the area where Rolling Stone writer David Lipsky (a perfectly cast Jesse Eisenberg) has come to deconstruct the man the New York Times labels “The greatest forget of his generation. ” For five days, they will live, eat and sleep together, both in Wallace’s cramped home, and on a expert two- day side trip to Minneapolis to promote “Infinite Jest. ” Neither man has any idea of what he’s in for in what emerges as a heavyweight wrangle between two pretentious writers verbally rope-a- doping until one finds an opening wide enough to deliver a damaging blow. And doing it all under the pretense of male bonding, with the mutual attraction being each wanting what the other possesses. On paper, it sounds uninteresting. I know this because that’s how I felt walking in. But Pulitzer-winning playwright Donald Margulies (“Dinner with Friends”) and official James Ponsoldt (“The Spectacular Now”) present the duo’s tete-a-tetes in such a compelling fashion that.milton.wickedlocal.com
Wolstanton yoke open new shabby chic furniture business - Stoke Sentinel
One Tracy and Brad Griffiths have launched a new 'upcycled' furniture business next door to their successful flower blow the whistle on buy. The entrepreneurs are hoping to cash in on the trend for 'shabby chic ' cabinets and drawers with the launch of 'It's All About Vintage' in Wolstanton. The pair have been meet 'All About Eden' florists for 13 years and decided to branch out when the neighbouring warehouse became available. Tracy, elderly 47, who studied floristry at college, said: "Myself and Brad have been working together for years now and it works de facto well. "I am very creative so after I had been upcycling furniture as a hobby for my own house for a while we decided to give it a go as a business. "I like buying pieces from contribution shops and giving them a distressed look. "I still love being a florist but I wanted to try something new. A different way of being artistic. The couple, from Porthill, rise furniture from the internet, auctions and adverts in The Sentinel before Tracy spends days giving each piece a unique look. She added: "I use a method called distressing where you distinguish the furniture look old by painting it and then rubbing it off in certain areas. "It's not a perfect look, it's shabby chic , but it gives furniture a new sublease out of life. No one piece is the same. Shoppers browsed the revamped coffee tables, footstools, chairs, dressing tables and mirrors during the organize day at the Ellison Street shop on Saturday. One piece up for sale was a £250 rustic dresser which Tracy had spent four days lovingly refurbishing after buying it on eBay. Brad, ancient 48, said: "The warehouse at the back became free and we had always wanted to do something with it ourselves so decided to make a go of it. "Tracy is the artistic one and she'd enchanted an interest in shabby chic so we decided that was probably a good way to go because not a lot of shops do that style. "Vintage is very in at the moment, nobody wants triplex brown furniture or even pine anymore. "Tracy spends a long time on each piece because the attention to detail is the notable thing and it all ends up looking really nice. "It was very exciting to open at the weekend. We've been looking fresh to it for a while and we got lots of great feedback on the day.www.stokesentinel.co.uk
Reassess: Dandy Longlegs, Silksworth Row, Sunderland - Sunderland Echo
The owners scoured eBay when dressing the venue and there’s some smashing talking point pieces, including a copper table top engraved with a map of the world, a kitsch salmon pink 1950s fireplace and a basic bar made from two penny pieces. It’s a breath of quirky fresh air in an oft-forgotten corner of town and works utterly alongside neighbouring pubs, such as the excellent Isis, if you’re looking for an alternative to the bright lights and alcopops of the borough centre. There’s even a corner dedicated to board games if you want to indulge your competitive side over a pint. In keeping with its discovery on the fringes of the city centre, the atmosphere is relaxed and informal and though Friday night saw a DJ behind the decks, the funk and force tunes were at just the right decibel level so you can audibly natter over your meal. The menu doffs its cap to its locality with options such as Boldon bangers and mash (£8. 95), surf and personal space horse-racing using Northumberland sirloin (£19. 95) and North East culinary classics such as garlic stottie (£2. 95) and a Great parmo (£8. 95), the venue’s take on that post-pub staple dish. There’s a good selection of belly-fillers, such as steak, fish and chips and some imaginatively titled burgers, such as The Beau Brummel (£7. 95), a meaty obeisance to one of the greatest of dandies. We chose two of the platters to share: the platter pesce (£11. 95) and the platter veggio (£8. 95). They’re a not outstanding size and the fish version came with enough prawns, calamari and fish bites to go around. The veggie style offered mounds of garlic mushrooms, a round of goats cheese, strips of carrots and cucumber, bruschetta and tortilla crisps. Each comes with pots of dips, though the accompanying garlic stottie – as sensitive as it was on its own – didn’t really work with fish pate and houmous. A side of plain bread would have proved sympathetic for mopping up the remaining dips. Special mention must go to the bowl of chips which came with the platters – a heap of big, swarming, proper chips. None of your limp, skinny fries here. Everything is cooked from fresh, so you’re warned that you may have to interval longer than chain bars for food, but this is very much a destination venue where you could spend all night grazing and drinking. As such, we didn’t mind any delay. Speaking of drinks, I’ve heard quibbles about the lack of draught options, but if draught and guest ales are what you’re after.www.sunderlandecho.com
