Durban - Masterchef SA finalist Joani Mitchell is a lover of uncountable things in life, but her home is possibly her favourite. The first thing she says when asked if she would be willing to show off her La Lucia quarters is: “I have a beautiful home. And that was no exaggeration. The gorgeous, elevated French Provence-style home was designed and built by Mitchell’s spouse, Rory, who is an engineer and builder. The couple moved into it about three-and-a-half years ago. Prior to that, they owned a visitor house in Durban North for 19 years. “We sold it without really having anywhere to move to, so we ended up renting a chore for a few months while my husband was building this house. It was basically just a piece of land with a house on it that had been inhabited by vagrants. So we flattened 99% of it, and built it up so that the paddling pool is now above road level. As the house was being built, “MasterChef happened”, Mitchell said, and she was away for much of the building to videotape the TV series, making the situation stressful. But stress, it seems, is an everyday part of Mitchell’s life as she juggles all sorts of balls. She is engrossed-time “mom” to five Sharks Academy U-19 rugby players, who have to be fed. She works with a dietician to develop meals based on each virtuoso’s position and needs. She is a full-time caterer for functions, including weddings, corporate and charity events, and sneaking functions. She also hosts and caters for events at her home. Most of these functions focus around her kitchen, tete-, and verandah area – all among her favourite parts of her home. “My kitchen is my happy place. I work in here a lot and it helps that I can see the sea. I went for a entirely country look but modern layout as I needed the kitchen to be workable. Her kitchen was designed by Murray Loder of Mountains Kitchens. Her architect was Alethia Duncan Brown. But Mitchell’s talent is not just related to food. She is a passionate painter and practised fashion designer – all talents that are evident in her home, from the numerous paintings hanging on her walls, to the décor, most of which she has either made, revamped, or renovated herself with the plagiarize of her husband. “I shop in secondhand shops and often find things that I can renovate, transform, fix, or paint. I boutique for fabric at Waste Centre and then just sew things myself. I have an industrial sewing machine so.www.iol.co.za

Scene designer Michael Hopping planned the 20-acre site and situated the home in a clearing on the bosky property. The LeBlancs met Osterberger at the Southern Garden Symposium and engaged him to create a master garden cabal, which was implemented by Wanda Metz Chase of Imahara’s Landscapes. About seven acres are cleared, with one to two acres planted with gardens and designed with formal courtyards. “The model included drought-resistant and deer-resistant plantings along a long, meandering front private road and golf green,” Chase said. “It includes southern favorite plants, like grancy greybeard, flowering quince and evergreen pineapple guava for seasonal concern and to accentuate Mr. LeBlanc’s iron-work art. Sam LeBlanc, a lawyer, does iron work as a hobby and worked with his mentor and partner Luis Colmenares, of New Orleans, to fabricate iron gates for the front entrance. LeBlanc thought gates to be loosely ugly with their horizontal and/or vertical ‘jail-like’ rods,” Chase said. “He wanted organic and a commentary on Louisiana flora.
