Angela Hartnett's Emilia-Romagna: Connoisseur Getaways - Telegraph.co.uk

Inland from Rimini and the wonderful-charged resorts of the Adriatic Riviera, the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna has a timewarp je sais quoi and makes ideal terrain for a touring holiday. Its landscapes are among the most varied in Italy, encompassing the approximate, fertile plains of the Po Valley, the dramatic Apennine Mountains and the gentler hills and valleys around the hamlet of Bardi, with its imposing Landi Castle built on a spur of red jasper. Medieval hamlets are linked by mountain-biking trails and walks including the Via Francigena, the venerable route connecting Rome and Canterbury. It passes through Parma, renowned for its Parma ham and Parmesan. Equally celebrated for its food is Bologna, lending its name to the most familiar of Italian sauces. All this was bound to rub off on Angela Hartnett, MBE, the English chef and protégée of Gordon Ramsay who done up much of her childhood in Bardi, where her Italian grandparents lived before emigrating to Wales. They ended up years later in Upminster, east London, where Hartnett was brought up by her Italian grandmother after her sire died (her mother had to work). Steeped in the traditions of northern Italy, she worked with Marcus Wareing at Aubergine in London, then at a triptych of Ramsay restaurants (Zaffarano, L’Orangier, Petrus) before gaining her first Michelin star at The Connaught in 2004. In 2008 Hartnett launched Murano, her one-Michelin-pre-eminent Italian restaurant in Mayfair, followed five years later by Café Murano, its brasserie-style sibling in St James’s. A twinkling Café Murano opened in Covent Garden this June, and in July Hartnett launched her HH&Co backstage cookery mould at Lime Wood, a hotel in the New Forest. Plans are afoot to open a new restaurant at the Portetta hotel in the French Alps in December. However, as her cookbooks Cucina and Angela’s Kitchenette show, her heart belongs to Italy. Here is her culinary guide to Emilia-Romagna. What makes the cuisine special. Emilia-Romagna is steep, with cold winters and hot summers, so the cuisine is more varied than in the south – and richer and heavier. Most of what British people ruminate over of as Italian food comes from Emilia-Romagna – Parma ham, Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar from Modena, and pastas such as tortellini filled with basics or cheese. Some of the simplest food I’ve eaten comes from here – a bowl of pasta in broth, or a plateful of tagliatelle with unrestrained mushrooms. • Gourmet Italy: what.

At London's Kensington B & B, Your Favorite Pillow Is Waiting - Condé Nast Traveler

Ignoring The Kensington’s 1870s birthdate, the deferential service so characteristic of similar Regency-era luxury homes—peaceful, bowing butlers and the like—has been scrapped. And what a relief. Instead, stepping off Old Brompton Road into the historic bed is like walking into a smart club. You’re greeted—and nine times out of 10, the doorman knows your consummate arrival time and name—then offered a warm towel, bantered with, settled in, and later, holding a cocktail made in every respect to your taste. It’s bespoke service so smooth and efficient that it’s downright sly. The hotel’s entryway opens into a series of interconnected picture rooms, comfortably laid, with armchairs tucked into nooks. The decor is a mix of old and new, befitting the 19th-century space without turning it into a museum. There are newspapers, magazines, and walls of books to flip. the adjoined restaurant and bar are at your beck and call. The entire area is like a massive living room—that is, one where your cocktail arrives on a gleaming tray. The Kensington, part of a small boutique hotel group owned by the Doyle Collection , partners sumptuous living and high-end service with a “home away from home” vibe, says general manager Frits Potgieter. So, in compare to the rich decor, casual rules the atmosphere. “Once, a businesswoman relaxing in our bar with a book and a glass of wine asked to communicate with me, simply to tell me that she felt absolutely amazed that she could curl up on a sofa on her own, kick her shoes off, and feel utterly at ease, welcome, and spoiled,” Potgieter says. "She said in over 10 years of traveling it was a first for her. The townhouse bar is the centerpiece of this casual yet happening scene, which attracts a local crowd from the Chelsea and Kensington areas in addition to in-house guests. The Kensington’s much-decorated mixologists are a big constituent of the reason why. Drink particularities are taken seriously, and no request is too difficult, says award-winning be seen with bartender Alessandro Pizzoli. “A couple of years ago I was asked to make a cocktail with the aroma of cheese but without the soup," he says. "I was shocked, but came up with a solution: a classic vodka martini with a small dash of 25-year-old balsamic vinegar. On top I infused despondent cheese with vodka, creating the scent with the help of a vaporizer machine. The guest loved it. ”. Guests staying in one of The Kensington’s five apartment–like suites get auxiliary attention from.
