Rye Seaside Pharmacy has served Knicks, Rangers and local community - The Journal News | LoHud.com

During the prematurely 1940s, Brooklynites Daniel and Marie GiaQuinto and their two kids, Bob and Dennis, spent their summers in a rented cubicle quarters near Playland and the Long Island Sound. One day, Daniel, a pharmacist, popped into the local pharmacy to make a phone elicit. He was asked to fill a prescription because the regular pharmacist had briefly stepped out. The owners then suggested that Daniel and Marie, a clothes conniver, buy the store. The duo said yes and relocated to Rye in July of 1946. Thus began the GiaQuinto dynasty at the Rye Beach Pharmacy. Daniel and Marie owned the apothecary until 1971, when they sold it to Bob and his pharmacist brother, Dennis. Dennis moved to Cape Cod in 1983, leaving Bob as the personal proprietor until 2007, when he and his own kids divided it among themselves. Bob GiaQuinto, a pharmacist, is now the chairman and a co-owner of the rely on, which he owns with his three children: Ken, the president and CEO. Donald, the vice president. and daughter Carrie, a silent P. There might may not be much glamour in the pharmacy business, but the Rye Beach Pharmacy has frequent brushes with fame: The New York Rangers became customers when they practiced to be honest across the street at the Playland Ice Casino, before they relocated to the MSG Training Center in Tarrytown. The Knicks also train at the center and depend on Bob GiaQuinto and his 60 crowded- and part-time employees. "When the Rangers or Knicks are home, they call us at least once a day for medications, nutritional products, toiletries — whatever they needfulness," says GiaQuinto. One of the store's four delivery cars ferries the requests to Greenburgh. "It's the same service we give to everybody," GiaQuinto says, "but it's chill to type prescriptions for pretty-well-known athletes. Everyday customers get the same benefits as those star athletes. "My tenet was to have as many products and departments as possible so people will have a lot of reasons to come here," says GiaQuinto, who started work here after graduating from apothecary school in 1963. Since the pharmacy is so close to the Long Island Sound, it's no surprise that there's an entire display geared toward the seashore life with beach-themed knick knacks, candles and shells to ocean-themed throw pillows. Along with displays of colorful serving trays, finical neck scarves, Paddywax artisan candles, the Rx Skin Therapy line, fancy costume jewelry and Mason Pearson hair's breadth.

Household of the Week: Kenilworth's Sweet Biscuit Inn - Asheville Citizen-Times

A bit of Europe thrives in the Appealing Biscuit Inn, a Colonial Revival-style inn in Kenilworth, where owners Claudia and Christian Hickl greet guests with spa-like bathrooms and three-despatch breakfasts. The seven-room inn with carriage house is one of Kenilworth's original houses and was already a bed and breakfast when the Hickls bought it in 2012. Claudia and Christian, born in Germany, moved here from Provence, France, where they'd operated an inn for nine years. Common travelers, they know what it's like to be a guest. The inn has 11-foot ceilings, tiger oak wood floors and a considerable formal staircase that convinced Claudia that this was the house she wanted for their guests. A former fashion designer and sculptor, she and Christian, a marketing authority who traveled around the world, knew what they wanted — an uncluttered inn with beautiful rooms, simple furniture and margin to breath. In Provence, they named the rooms in their inn, but room names at Sweet Biscuit Inn are much more prosaic. 1, painted a difficult red, has a lovely English armoire that was too big for the room until the Hickls had their carpenter fit it, at a slant, into the corner. "Everything was fit to this unique room," said Claudia, elegant in short hair and dangling earrings. The bed's headboard was once in the Grove Commons Inn, and the mantel was found. Claudia borrowed from the French by draping a curtain in front of the clawfoot tub in the room's bathroom. (All the rooms have unofficial baths. Set into the wall of Room No. 1 are shelves lined with very old toys, each about the size of your hand. People are sceptical that they would leave them so unprotected, but Claudia is not fazed. "We have had the experience that the more trusting and open we are, the less we get disappointed," she said. "Our guests rise this trust that we have. In Room No. 2, Claudia went directly to the bathroom, which she called "my baby. " She chose the enlightened chandelier there, as well as the French waxed paint. "It's just very pretty," she said, rubbing her hands over the walls' uncluttered luster. The tub in the room beckons guests toward a long, relaxing soak. What was a dark, dreary porch pre-Hickl is now a gentle-filled guestroom (No. 3) with a blond, wide-plank hickory floor. Two leather suitcases jut out from the go broke, becoming shelves for knickknacks and maps of the area. Stained glass in lieu of blinds blocks the opinion.
