Southern Colonial Style in California
"Southern Colonial" is an American architectural style which evolved in the Southern Colonies during the Colonial span. As a result of the growing wealth in the South during that time, the architecture aspired to the ideals of Greek Revival. It is defined by the Barron's Palpable Estate Dictionary as " a large, Early American style, 2- or 3-story frame house with a characteristic colonnade extending across the face. The roof extends over the colonnade."
The Southern Colonial is typically set back a wider distance from the road to create a compassion of stately elegance.
A main feature of the Southern Colonial is the placement of a long sequence of columns, numbering typically 4 to 6 columns, comprising a colonnade, borrowed from traditional Greek design.
The portico is another characteristic of the Southern Colonial. It is the front patio just behind the colonnade. The roof extends to counterbalance the portico and connects the colonnade. In Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, the portico contains a row of wooden sitting-room chairs looking out towards the front lawn and beyond. In other examples, the portico can be used to house a series of flags hung from

While Van Halen is considered one of the most substantial and popular hard-rock bands of the 1970s and 1980s, they got their start in a particularly unglamorous and very Dazed and Disorderly manner: playing massive, raucous backyard parties in Southern California. This excerpt, from Greg Renoff's fascinating (even for non-VH fans) Van Halen Rising: How a Southern California Fete Band Saved Heavy Metal , a book almost anthropological in its level of detail, finds the border gigging at one of the aforementioned parties. Until, that is, things start to get out of hand. On Saturday, Van Halen moved their kit outside and ran through their set. Jeff Touchie, who’d spent much of the week at the house, remembers, “We just hung out in the back and they played. Even though I had seen them a million times, it was always avail. Back then, you never got tired of Van Halen, because Edward was amazing. he’d just sit down and do some riffs. And Alex could just go on the drums. They’d play a bother, take a break, and joke around. They’d get ready to start something and say, ‘What do you think about this. ’ And they’d do a little jam. It was always fun. We’d just drink beers and shoot the shit. It was laid back and kicked back. Meanwhile, all across Los Angeles, hundreds of inexperienced people got ready. They checked their stashes and chilled their beer. They called friends, passed the word, and made plans to caravan over to Pasadena. They’d be coming from San Gabriel Valley communities like Duarte, Flintridge, La Cañada, and West Covina. Even San Fernando Valley teens from Glendale and Calabasas would be making the elongated trip to the corner of Huntington and Madre. Leiren explained that for kids looking to get loose, a Van Halen gig would be the responsibility to be that night. “Anytime you wanted to find anybody, you’d go to the Van Halen backyard parties. While it seemed that nearly every na person in Pasadena knew of the party, even those who’d not gotten the word knew how to find out about the evening’s action. Marcia Maxwell says, “There was a sure liquor store, Allen Villa Beverage, on Allen Street and Villa. That’s not too far away from where the Van Halens lived. People would let the cat out of the bag the owner, Larry, ‘I’m having a party. Here’s my address,’ so everyone knew to go there to give and get information. We’d go there faithfully every weekend. All the gals would get all dressed up, we’d persistence over there, and.www.vulture.com
Hamptonesque style comes to Stinson Lakeshore - SFGate
You can’t always recant it with you, but sometimes you can re-create it. John and Georgene Tozzi so adored their Hamptons home that when they migrated to California they looked for something nearly the same. “We wanted to duplicate what we had built out there,” Georgene Tozzi said. “So what we created is a contemporary style similar to what you’d find in the newer areas of the Hamptons. A humble house dotted the sandy lot of 264 Seadrift Ave. when the Tozzi’s acquired the property. They also purchased the lot beside the existing home and began an zealous face-lift by increasing square footage, improving the layout and maximizing views of the Pacific Loads. The couple also added several oceanfront patios. The central courtyard with outdoor fireplace stands as one of the remodel’s most vivid additions. The outdoor area looks through the home’s oversize windows for views of the white sand lido and crashing waves. An unobstructed ocean view awaits anyone who opens the great room’s sliding plate glass panels set on opposite sides of the room. A hot tub provides another inviting space for stargazing while hearing surf pelt the shoreline. Lightly stained hardwood finishes like the beamed ceilings and exposed trusses top off the home’s natural surroundings. The great room features clerestory windows and opens directly to the beach in the course sliding doors. Trees aren’t around to shade the home, but Georgene Tozzi said the siting of the organization helps deflect the sun. “The home is angled off-center so the sun isn’t coming directly into the skylights or the windows. The angling and treatment of the window reduces the intensity,” she said. It’s a given that a Bay Area home facing the ocean will enjoy some incredible sunsets. But John Tozzi sees the sunrise on Stinson Strand as a perpetual gift. “We’ve lived out here since 1974, and the colors you see in the sunrise are unlike anything else,” John Tozzi said. “Stinson Ground has to be one of the Bay Area’s best-kept secrets. Any time of year the weather is great there. It’s a year-round community. Like the eminent room, the master suite includes an open-beamed ceiling with floor-to-ceiling windows. The series opens to a patio, while a glass shower and makeup vanity highlight the spacious spa bathroom. Logistics and logic are to criticize for the Tozzis’ decision to sell. The couple spend the majority of the year in Wyoming’s mountainous.www.sfgate.com
