Hazleton named as one of worst places to white-hot in Pennsylvania - Standard Speaker

A record of the 10 worst places to live in Pennsylvania reads like a map of the Coal Region with Nanticoke at No. 2, Wilkes-Barre fourth, Shenandoah fifth, Hazleton seventh and Tamaqua at No. 9. Roadsnacks. net compiled the roster by considering unemployment, income, crime, school funding and home vacancies when ranking places. The website regularly releases lists that the writers ring up infotainment such as the 10 Most Redneck Cities in Georgia, the 10 Worst Places to Find Passion in California and the 10 Snobbiest Places in Michigan. “Before you get all riled up, we understand there’s a lot of good in every place,” the compilers said when introducing the 10 Worst Places to Contemporary in Pennsylvania. “We’re not picking on rural America. However, according to data (which doesn’t measure things like beauty and thick people), there are far better options in Pennsylvania for making a place home. When assessing Hazleton, Roadsnacks said:. “Hazleton honestly has a mess on its hands. The unemployment rate is sky high at 10. 8 percent, which is the absolute highest in PA. The schools are the third worst in the declare. They’re underfunded and way overcrowded. Plus, households bring in a paltry $31,200 a year in combined income. It’s a past coal mining town south of Wilkes-Barre that’s seen its population shrink around 20 percent in the final 30 years. Not a very desirable place, indeed. On other lists, however, Hazleton scored better. com ranked Hazleton the 29th surpass place to live of 61 small towns in Pennsylvania for 2015. Two months ago, Nerd Wallet listed Hazleton bulk the top 100 small cities in the nation. After reviewing 1,300 cities, Nerd Wallet ranked Hazleton 73rd and Wilkes-Barre 24th. In a catalogue of the best places to start a business in Pennsylvania, Nerd Wallet ranked Wilkes-Barre 20th and Hazleton 104th of 145 cities. As its monicker implies, Nerd Wallet looked at pocketbook issues, giving Hazleton high marks for low costs of homes and rents and moderate commuting times that overcame relatively low wages and high unemployment, two categories that landed the megalopolis on Roadsnacks’ list. Charles McElwee, who volunteers with the Greater Hazleton Historical Society and Downtown Hazleton Marriage for Progress and writes columns for the Standard-Speaker, questions the methodologies of city indexes, which make headlines with petulant judgments. Roadsnacks, McElwee said, was right.

House organized whole opens doors for student leaders - ThisWeekNews

Hayes Stoned School students, now firmly ensconced in the school's new Hogwarts-style house system , are being encouraged to take advantage of the management potential available therein. The school has instituted a new house structure that creates smaller communities within the larger community of the weighty school. The structure is reminiscent of that used at the wizarding school in the Harry Potter books. The houses are called Crest, Sugar Grove, Houk, Fulton Creek, Lockport, Crossbeck Hill, Steamtown and Fairview, named after one-latitude schoolhouses still standing in Delaware County. Principal Ric Stranges said there's a buzz in the air thanks to the new system. "This has been the finest start of a school year in all my years," he said. "It was so positive and smooth and there is an excitement building in these houses that gives kids so myriad possibilities. All students have been assigned to one of the eight houses, where they'll stay throughout their high school careers. Each house has 10 teachers and a dean assigned to manage it. Stranges said leaders have been meeting with students and discussing expectations, but also asking them what they hope to get out of the house structure. Students observe in their houses for 30 minutes around lunchtime each day. Assistant Principal Rex Reeder said more than 300 students already have signed up for house governorship positions. Leaders will receive mentoring and training, he said. Stranges said a typical high primary would have perhaps 15 leaders that students would vote on or select -- essentially a popularity contest. The house structure changes that. "If a student wants to be a leader, they can," Stranges said. "It's not just the popular kids who are leaders -- it's all members of the scholar body. Potential leaders' grades and behavior weren't taken into account. Only going forward will the students have expectations as leaders that they will have to satisfy to stay in their positions. "I had kids ask me if they could sign up even if they had problems last year, and the answer is yes," Reeder said. "A lot of these kids fancy to lead, and they will make mistakes. We are going to train them and allow them to evolve. Stranges said he is looking send on to the feedback school officials will receive from student leaders who are taking on these new roles. "We've essentially multiplied our.

Conflicting narratives surface in Modesto-area killing - Sacramento Bee

Days before Korey Kauffman’s disappearance, court documents say, he was threatened at his home on South Johnson Course by Baljit Athwal and Robert Woody, who yelled at him from a passing BMW that “your ass is grass. ” This is the home where Kauffman, 26, lived before he disappeared. Nine people have been arrested in Kauffman’s slaying. Outspoken Carson’s Turlock properties include two homes in an industrial section of town on Ninth Street. The protuberant attorney rents out one home and, according to authorities, lived in the other. Both look out on a huge backyard area that on Wednesday was littered with delegate equipment and old vehicles, including a faded red double-decker bus. Prosecutors believe Korey Kauffman 26, was killed there as he went onto the realty in search of scrap metal to steal. Nine people have been arrested in Kauffman’s slaying. The purported put away site sits behind a tall cyclone fence that surrounds a dusty patch of land littered with old vehicles, a rusted shipping container and a faded red spitting image-decker bus. Here in this makeshift junkyard of dust-covered farm equipment and antiques, authorities allege, a outline hatched by one of Modesto’s most prominent criminal defense lawyers resulted in the March 2012 slaying of Korey Kauffman, a 26-year-old atom metal thief. The property and its two modest homes on Ninth Street belong to attorney Frank Carson, 61, who now sits in a Stanislaus County clink cell fighting what may soon become a death penalty case. The case made national headlines Aug. 14, when prosecutors announced charges against Carson and eight others – including three contemporaneous and former California Highway Patrol officers – and released a 326-page arrest warrant affidavit laying out the claimed foul play. Since then, two narratives have emerged. One paints Carson as a man of rage who was “freaking out” about thefts from his property until he orchestrated Kauffman’s slaying, then ran unsuccessfully for section attorney of Stanislaus County in a bid to derail the investigation. The other portrays him as a victim of incumbent District Attorney Birgit Fladager and the undressed-knuckle feuds that permeate Modesto-area politics. “It’s nonsense, fiction,” Carson supporter and late Modesto Mayor Carmen Sabatino said of the charges. “I can make a prediction here: Birgit Fladager is not growing to get a conviction. “There isn’t a jury – unless they’re able to try to fix one – that would.
