What's It Good? Carousel piece, Lion Coffee box, oak rocking chair, wooden ... - OregonLive.com
Carousel bawling-out. Years ago I purchased this carousel piece from an antiques store in Petaluma, California. It looks as if it was painted in oil and the drink up appears original. The dealer who sold it to me said that it was originally part of a French carousel. It would have hung high on the skin perimeter so that you saw one bird from the outside and the other from the inside once you had stepped on. It measures 26 1/2 inches wide by 34 inches high. I'm very curious about its origin and age. , San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Your folk art-style, hand-painted panel does show oneself to be from a carousel, though it is difficult to know if it is American or European in origin. It likely dates from around 1900 or a bit later. The mob indicates that it was part of a larger assemblage. The word "carousel" comes from the Italian word carosello , significance "little war. " Carosello was a 12th century horseback game played by the Arabs and Turks, using scented balls tossed back and forth. The French expanded carosello into a horsemanship rivalry that included spearing a ring suspended from a post or tree, while riding at full speed. To practice, under age men mounted legless wooden horses attached to a rotating platform. This machine turned out to be popular with women and children, and the first off steam-powered carousel made its debut in England in 1861. In the United States, the "golden age" of the carousel lasted from circa 1880 to about 1930. The National Carousel Association is a treasure house of information about carousels, primarily in the Coalesced States. The International Museum of Carousel Art in Hood River is also an excellent source, though it is currently closed for relocation. At auction, your carousel portion would likely fetch $1,000-$1,500. A dealer might ask $2,500-$3,500. Lion Coffee box. I was given this old Lion Coffee bin about 45 years ago and it's traveled with me over the years, being using as a storage box for blankets and bedding. All of the tint and hardware is original, and the front panel is split, but the images are still very clear. The lid slants down. It measures 32 1/2 inches spaced out and is about 21 inches wide and deep. Can you tell me something about when it was made and what part of the country it came from.www.oregonlive.com
Mid-Burgh furniture store House Stuff - bestofneworleans.com
Celebrating two years this June, Congress Stuff (3939 Toulouse St. , 504-638-7332. www. com/HouseStuffNOLA ) is a small Mid-City trove of vintage and antique furnishings stocked and operated by Flora Shaughnessy. Her governor was in the furniture business for 40 years, and after helping out at his Canal Furniture Liquidators in the days before his retirement, Shaughnessy hatched a devise with her husband Allen to open her own shop. The store is founded on Shaughnessy's appreciation of well-designed, real wood craftsmanship — "pieces that have credibility," as she describes them — to the extent that she does not sell items made with particleboard. If she discovers the manufactured marrow in any piece she has purchased, she offers it at a bargain price to move it out of the store. The delivery truck arrives regular with new pieces, Shaughnessy says. She works directly with secondhand dealers and storied hotels, gets beginning calls from local estate sales and does her own hunting. All this inventory turns over at a quick clip, she says. "Time after time a buyer will find a piece they like, then go home to measure their room, but when they get back it's already sold," Shaughnessy says. A congregation of chairs greets customers from the corner sidewalks, and favoured the refurbished 1920s building one block off Carrollton Avenue, there's an eclectic mix of furniture, lamps, bedding and paint. "More customers are tackling their own DIY projects now, so they are buying with the end of giving it a whole new look," she says. Shaughnessy carries Heirloom Traditions chalk type paints and gives away a free of charge brush with each batch of cans purchased. French Provincial styles are another trend. "It's ornate and curvy, and very articulately-made," Shaughnessy says. "That's been selling a lot for children's bedrooms. Mid-century modern pieces are a favorite to each her clientele, which ranges from young families and singles who appreciate all things vintage to the elderly outfitting their grandchildren's college apartments. The upscale, urban-predilection clean lines of the Mad Men era hold huge appeal for a variety of New Orleanians and for Hollywood South. The new ABC series The Astronaut Wives Consortium, which filmed in the greater New Orleans area , nearly cleaned her out of the style earlier this year, Shaughnessy says.
